Dorothy Martin, the powerhouse lead singer of the rock band DOROTHY, whose music has racked up over 1 billion streams, sits down with Grazia to reveal the inspirations behind her songs, the role faith plays in her life, and the rituals that keep her grounded amid the chaos of fame. From soulful reflections on recovery and resilience to candid takes on fashion, aging, and self-care, she shares a rare glimpse into the woman behind the hits—and the mindset that drives her creativity.

When writing new music, where do you usually draw inspiration from — personal experiences, current events, or something else entirely?

I draw inspiration from life, sometimes painful experiences, my friends’ stories, and topics like recovery, spiritual warfare, and faith.

Which song of yours do you feel is most you, and what’s the story behind it?

All my songs originate from a genuine place, and my "song of the moment" tends to change depending on what season of life I’m in. Right now, I feel like ELEVATE is the most me and perfectly describes where I’m at.

Faith plays a big role in your life. How does it influence your music, decisions, or creative process?

Faith influences everything! It is the most important thing to me. My relationship with God is where I draw strength to walk through the dark valleys of life.

Who is the coolest celebrity or music star you’ve ever met, and why?

Both Dolly Parton and Slash from Guns ‘n’ Roses were incredibly kind, encouraging, talented, and humble. I really enjoyed collaborating on songs with them. They were great examples of what I aspire to be. I’ve unfortunately also had bad experiences with successful musicians who turned out to be abusive and cruel behind closed doors. I believe in treating everyone well and advocating for women to leave abusive situations so they can heal. Truth always comes out. You can’t hide bad behaviour behind fame and money forever.

Your stage looks are iconic. How much of your on-stage style reflects your personal wardrobe off-stage?

I am very casual and active off-stage. I like to be comfortable and ready for a jog or a boxing class. I wear toned-down versions of what I wear on stage. My closet is full of boots, leather, and vintage band tees!

High-end labels or thrift store treasures, which side wins in your wardrobe?

It’s a mix of both. If I LOVE it, I get it!

Dorothy Martin

What’s the one piece of clothing or accessory you can’t live without, whether on tour or in daily life?

My Brooks running shoes, and a good high-quality leather jacket.

If you had to describe your personal style in three words, what would they be?

Powerful, Boho, Edgy.

Touring can be exhausting. Do you have a go-to beauty or skincare routine that keeps you looking and feeling your best?

My number one priority is sleep and hydration. Regular exercise helps. I take good quality supplements, and I keep my skincare simple. I like Eminence skin serums.

Are there any wellness rituals, such as meditation or workouts, that help you stay grounded and focused?

I pray and meditate daily. I like to get out into nature and jog or walk. I take it one day at a time and put God and sobriety first.

How do you feel about ageing?

It’s inevitable, isn’t it? I love myself more now at almost 40 years old than I did my younger self. Life has given me wisdom. I am not afraid of aging, but I also believe in plenty of self-care.

Outside of music, what’s a hobby or passion that keeps you inspired?

Boxing, Muay Thai, going to the shooting range, Reading and collecting books, and my kitties.

Desert island movie — what’s the one must-watch film you’d bring with you?

The science-fiction action-horror film They Live.

If your life were a comic book, what would your superpower be?

I constantly have flying dreams so flight.

If you could design your perfect weekend, what would it include?

Waking up in Santorini to a delicious double espresso and croissants, while looking out over the glistening gemstone blue water and feeling the warm summer breeze rustling through my balcony. Eating delicious Greek food and taking sunset walk on the beach with someone I love.

What advice would you give young women trying to carve out their own identity in the music industry?

Get an amazing lawyer and business manager, operate with integrity, do not sell
yourself short or compromise on your own morals and boundaries.

Can you give us a sneak peek into any upcoming projects or releases you’re excited about?

I might do a song collaboration with a famous rock star friend; you’ll have to stay tuned! I’m also hitting the road soon for The Rise of Rock World Tour 2026 alongside rock legends Godsmack and Stone Temple Pilots, performing at venues across North America from May through September. For any U.S.-based Grazia readers, tickets are available on my website, dorothyonfire.com.
